Dr. Marilyn “Marty” Douglas, PhD, RN, FAAN is a Clinical Professor (now Volunteer) in the School of Nursing at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and the Editor-in-Chief Emerita of the Journal of Transcultural Nursing. Dr. Douglas earned her doctorate in International and Cross Cultural Nursing from UCSF, MSN in Cardiovascular Nursing from the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., and BSN from the Ohio State University. She served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Colómbia, South America, assigned as head nurse of intensive care units in both Bogotá and Cáli. These experiences, coupled with the fact that all 4 of her grandparents were immigrants, resulted in a heightened sensitivity to the influence of culture on health care beliefs and practices. With more than 35 years experience in cardiovascular critical care nursing, she has focused her research on the cultural variability in the response to pain. After serving as president of the Transcultural Nursing Society, she became Editor-in Chief of the Journal of Transcultural Nursing for 15 years. She was also the principal co-editor of the Core Curriculum for Transcultural Nursing and assisted in the development of the Basic Certification examination that was based on this Core Curriculum. In addition, as a member of the American Academy of Nursing’s Expert Panel on Global Nursing and Health, she chaired a task force that developed global standards of practice for culturally competent nursing care. Guidelines for implementing these standards have now been endorsed by the International Council of Nurses and distributed to its members. More recently she was the principal co-editor of the textbook Global Applications of Culturally Competent Health Care: Guidelines for Practice, which provides further guidance on how to implement these standards of culturally competent care into clinical practice.
